AmaZulu, one of South Africa’s oldest clubs, was founded in 1932 by Zulu migrant workers under the name Zulu Royal Conquerors. After Solomon, the then-Zulu king, was introduced to the team, he changed the name to Zulu Royals, changed the team’s colors to royal blue and white, and added a shield to the team’s logo.

Initially, Prince Bayisikili was designated as the team guardian at eMsizini; he was later succeeded by Prince Sithela. By that time, the team’s colors had changed to bottle green and white, and its headquarters were located at the eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal. The team went to play a cup game against SAPPI Homestars at eMandeni on the day of King Bhekizulu’s funeral in 1968, which they lost 4-2. The club was supposed to accompany the King’s coffin on the day of the funeral, but Mr. Shezi, Mr. Nsele, and Mr. Magwaza instead escorted the King while donning the team’s uniform.

After that game, there was a fight among the club’s supporters over how the team could play on the day of the Zulu King’s funeral when the team was supposed to be in mourning for the King’s passing. This argument included Prince Sithela. As the argument went on, Mr. Gideon Sibiya and Mr. Ntuli, who had been accompanying the club to eMandeni, decided to take it to eWema instead of eMbelebeleni, where it was no longer accepted.

The team was completely rebuilt at the end of 1970 by the remaining committee members, Mr. Mkhize and Mr. Ralph Mabaso, who also hired players, bought a kit, and named Mr. Bethuel Masondo as the team manager. The club was subsequently registered as Zulu Royals United, with Mr. Bethuel Masondo serving as its sole director. They chose to return the team’s base of operations to eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal.Lineup for Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu

A team from Kwa-Zulu Natal called the African Wanderers was having issues in the National Professional League (NPSL) in 1971, which prompted the NPSL to decide that the Kwa-Zulu Natal Football Association should suspend the African Wanderers from the NPSL and then suggest another team from Kwa-Zulu Natal to take their place. Following that, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Football Association suggested the teams listed below: Young Dribblers, Zulu Royals United, Union Jacks, Durban City All Blacks

Mr. RD Sishi, the then-chairman of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), decided that Zulu Royal’s United should take the place of the African Wanderers in the NPSL because the Zulu Royals were a team that represented the Zulu Nation from the Royal Kraal and had a larger fan base than the clubs that were suggested.

The African Wanderers were replaced by the Zulu Royals in 1971, and they went on to place sixth overall on the log and win club of the year honors. With 44 points from 26 games and only 2 losses, the club won the N.P.S.L league championship the following year, in 1972.Lineup for Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu

Zulu Royal experienced a severe setback in 1973 when the club’s manager at the time, Mr. Bethwell Masondo, quit and took a number of important players with him, causing the club to fracture. Following this unfortunate incident, the team experienced a midseason slump that prevented them from successfully defending their league title. The club’s management was taken over by the fans in 1974, and the following year the team changed its name to AmaZulu Football Club. Some fans, led by Mr. Francis Dlamini, the reserve team manager, made the decision to move the team to Bhekizulu Hall and rename it Zulu Royals United, with the nickname “esikotshi.”

Mr. Merikan Madlala from Lamontville and Mr. Ngongoma, Mr. Duma, Mr. Mathe, Mr. Dlamini, Mr. Biyela, and Mr. Nhleko, who had purchased the team for R 4000.00, other directors included Mr. Manana and Mr. Nxumalo.
