How the draw works

The draw to create the UEFA Champions League Groups 2022/2023

  • 32 teams are involved in the draw, including the six play-off match winners and the 26 teams who received direct entry into the groups.
  • Four seeding pots will be used to group the teams. The champions of the six highest-ranked nations who did not qualify via one of the 2021/22 titles will be in Pot 1, along with the holders, UEFA Europa League champions, and the current holders. Pots 2 through 4 will be determined by the club coefficient rankings.
  • Clubs will be paired in associations with two representatives to divide their games between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Two pairings will be made for associations with four representatives each. These pairings should be determined by TV viewers.
  • No team is allowed to play a team from their own league. Any additional limitations will be disclosed before the draw.

Where is the UEFA Champions League final in 2023?

The final will take place at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, home of the Turkish national team. The venue famously hosted the 2005 decider, when Liverpool recovered from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan in the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’.

Istanbul was initially selected to host the 2020 final, but this was moved to Lisbon due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the 2021 showpiece was due to take place in Istanbul, only for this also to be relocated – to Porto – to allow fans of each team to attend.
