Ethiopia is testing or installing 5G alongside Botswana, Egypt, Gabon, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. However, several of these nations are experiencing delays.

Botswana: On February 25, Botswana’s Mascom presented 5G to Gaborone citizens. It began with four locations in the city, with plans to install more than 100 base stations by the end of 2022.

Egypt: Orange won spectrum from the Egyptian government in February, allowing it to test 5G networks with Vodafone Egypt, Egypt Telecom, and Etisalat Egypt. Egyptians will have to wait for 5G services, despite their optimism.

Gabon: Gabon Telecom is yet to go commercial after testing the technology in November 2019. Its CEO is aiming for 2023.

Kenya, Ethiopia’s southern neighbor, has been testing the technology for a year, but internet consumers will have to wait until the end of the year, when the country’s telecommunications regulator is anticipated to award 5G licenses to mobile carriers. In 2026, the country is predicted to account for more than half of the continent’s meager 5G mobile subscribers.

Lesotho: Since the Lesotho government granted Vodacom a temporary spectrum in 2018 to experiment with 5G technology, it has been a painful ride. Disputes between Vodacom, Econet, and the regulator have stymied any serious 5G rollout.

Madagascar: Madagascar’s Telma followed South Africa in launching a commercial 5G network in July 2020, but three weeks later, the country’s regulator instructed the business to suspend its plans.

Mauritius: On July 30, last year, the Mauritius government announced the country’s first 5G network rollout to span four zones, but no plans for a fully commercial roll-out were shared.

Nigeria: The continent’s largest economy obtained spectrum licenses in March and hopes to have the continent’s largest 5G network this year. The commercial launch is scheduled for August.

Senegal: Senegal’s Sonatel and Orange have been conducting 5G testing in Dakar since November 2020, although the network is still mostly inoperable.

Seychelles: Citizens expressed skepticism about the country’s 5G deployment in 2020, citing health concerns. A year later, inhabitants in six locations are receiving 1.2Gbps speeds from Cable and Wireless Seychelles for up to 100GB of consumption.

South Africa: The continent’s first 5G adopter brought out the technology on a temporary spectrum, but due to significant load on networks during the pandemic, Vodacom, Rain, and MTN were instructed to stop using it in November 2021. The government received roughly $1 billion from its long-awaited 5G spectrum auction in March.

Uganda: Uganda became the first east African country to test the feasibility of constructing a 5G network with ZTE and MTN in January 2020. However, a commercial launch has yet to occur.

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe’s Econet claimed on February 24 that it had built the country’s first 5G network and will activate two dozen stations by the end of the month.

Safaricom, Kenya’s top 5G operator, stated this month that the exorbitant cost of 5G-enabled devices is impeding the company’s desire to offer mobile 5G services.
