In order to lessen the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant was implemented during the National State of Disaster in 2020.

The Disaster Management Act of 2002’s Section 27(2) gives the government the authority to issue instructions to the general public when a disaster is present. The R350 grant was first introduced as a result of this act.

However, when President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted the state of emergency in April 2022, the rules allowing the government to provide citizens with the R350 grant also expired.

According to Paseka Letsatsi, a spokesperson for Sassa, the organization will now offer the R350 grant in accordance with the Social Assistance Act.

“We’ll make sure that people receive what is owed to them,” he said. “We’ll definitely make sure that we process everything to ensure that we are on par, and if it has to take longer, obviously people will be paid what is due to them at the time they applied.”

Letsatsi continues by saying that Sassa’s systems are prepared to handle all of the applications it anticipates in the upcoming days.
